A 1905 image showing the house partly hemmed-in on the Mass. Ave. frontage and most of the battlefield occupied by houses built in the 1890s and torn down to restore the field in 1960. More buildings would further encroach on the JRH in the early 20th c.
I am a direct descendent of Jason Russell. My sister and I visited the Jason Russell house in early in the 21st century. I am Philip Russell and my sister is Eunice Russell Schatz.
Hello Philip! It’s always nice to see Russell descendants here. We’re so happy to preserve your family history and this important house. Where are you located?
My grandparents Frank and Pauline (Hatfield) Clare lived in this house in the 1915 time frame. I believe that two of their children (an aunt and an uncle of mine) were born here. My mother was born in 1920 after the family moved out. My grandmother once gave me an envelope addressed to her at that address when I was a child collecting stamps. I still have this.
Hello Ward!
That’s really interesting. We’re finding a lot of people were born in t hat house through the centuries. We’re particularly interested in people who lived in the house after the Russell family moved out. It sounds like your grandparents lived there shortly before it was purchased by the Society. I’ll update the info in records for your family in our database and someone will get in touch with you by email.
