This year’s “Throwback Thursday” coincides with Flag Day, and features the thematically attired Edward H. H. Bartlett of 216 Pleasant St. He was born in England in 1861 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1872. Extremely patriotic about his adopted country, Bartlett led the effort in 1905 for Town Meeting to authorize $100 to erect a flag pole atop the old town hall. The Committee of Twenty-One (a predecessor to today’s Finance Committee) recommended against the article, but the flag supporters prevailed. A booklet of colorful patriotic prose describing the effort, titled “How Arlington Won the Flag on the Town House,” can be viewed in digitized version here: <https://archive.org/details/ howarlingtonwonf00bart> Photo of Bartlett is courtesy of Robbins Library.
